Ryōkan in Banská Štiavnica

An electroacoustic meditation on poetry, improvisation, and silence.

Ryōkan in Banská Štiavnica is a full-length electroacoustic composition developed during a residency at the Eleuzína Cultural Centre in Banská Štiavnica. The work draws on the poetry and letters of the Japanese Zen monk and poet Ryōkan (1758—1831), interwoven with field recordings made in Banská Štiavnica, electronic drones, and a live musical performance.

The piece is performed by Ian Mikyska (viola da gamba, recorders) and Milan Jakeš (violin), who navigate a delicate space between composition and improvisation. The improvisational framework is shaped by principles inspired by North Indian classical music, particularly the use of modes in relation to a continuous drone and the overall form of the work. The result is a focused, poetic meditation on melody and duration, words and intervals, time, silence, and flow.

Performers:
Ian Mikyska (viola da gamba, recorders)
Milan Kárník Jakeš (violin)
